The Battle of Race vs. Gender

  • Feb 10, 2008

Over the last few months the media has been increasingly overtaken by a political frenzy.  Every election year this is the case, but this year is different.  The race to be the next President of the United States has brought to focus not only Democrat or Republican, but also white, black, male or female.

In a recent CNN Special with Anderson Cooper he explored what it means for different races and different sexes to vote for these candidates.  According to a poll by CNN 72% of white voters and 61% of black voters say that the country is ready for a black president.  According to the same poll, 64% of men and 65% of women are ready for a woman president.  CNN also said that never before have black women held so much political power.  The special commented on the fact that it has become a huge deal for black women because they say this forces them to choose between being black and being a woman.  It was also said that black women who vote for Hillary Clinton are considered "sell-outs."

I think that all of this has all been taken completely out of context.  I think that it is important for everyone, including black women, to vote for the issues at hand, not for their race or gender.  I believe that black women do have a choice to make during this election, a very important decision at that. But I also think that America has a very important choice to make during this election.  I do think it is very important to recognize how far our country has come to have  a black man and a white woman running for president.  However, our country needs an election with an outcome that will turn this country around, and the only way we can do that is to vote for the person who you believe can do that for us, regardless of their race or gender.
